Student Project, AHO, 2024

With the intention of preserving, studying and exhibiting films, a new cinematheque finds itself on a busy corner in Oslo. Archiving a fragile medium with great cultural significance inspired us to build in stone, an everlasting heavy material that can withstand not only the test of time but also provide protection against external threats. Working with the natural light, we wanted to create spaces that offer a cinematic atmosphere, underlining the theme of the archive.
When materials are extracted, new spaces are created not only in the places we build, but also in the places we harvest. Since our project in Oslo requires a lot of stone it is fun to envision something taking place in that void. We imagine a Nordic film festival happening in the highest point of the Sirevåg quarry, with a scenic view of the anorthosite mountains and the North Sea.
